Nearly all of us are guilty of running on autopilot at one point or another, most of us at a certain point each day. The pressures of the world, thoughts beyond our control, and the ease of which we can escape using technology – all can easily have us seek out an alternative to engagement with those around us.
However, when we do this, it robs the world of your gift, of your unique contribution, of your spark of light in an otherwise dimly lit room.
It is so easy to slip into this mode that we rarely feel it happening until we are jolted awake having completely forgotten how we made it there. Hopefully it is a momentary lapse but all too often it becomes a continual state. Managers, customer service reps, Jersey Turnpike toll workers, TSA agents, store clerks, etc, etc, etc.
Which is why it is so worth celebrating when you encounter someone who is so truly alive and genuinely human. It is worthy of celebration when someone takes the time to care, the effort to go beyond the status quo, and cares enough to open themselves up to the rest of the world.
Every opportunity you get to recognize someone who brings their very best to life, to their work, do it. Give them the acknowledgement that you welcome their humanity and celebrate with them in their struggle against becoming an unfeeling drone.
Do it enough and we may just be able to tip the scales in favor of the human spirit and wake the rest of the world up to the fact that there is a better way.
